Access in Rio

I'm a travel agent who has a client in a wheelchair who wants to go to Rio de Janeiro. I'm experienced with the air and hotel portion, but I'm struggling with the ground transportation and wheelchair friendly activities in Rio. Would you have any information or suggestions for me?

Although access is improving in Brazil, it’s still pretty rough going for wheelchair-users. That said, I’ve known several wheelers who have visited Rio and had a great time; however they didn’t go into it expecting everything to be 100% wheelchair-accessible. In short, you have to be willing to accept a little physical assistance (lifting, carrying) where the structural access is lacking.

The good news is that accessible taxis are now available in Rio. These Fiat Doblo vans feature a rear lift, sturdy tie-downs and room for one wheeler and two able-bodied companions. Designed with a raised roof and high windows, they also offer folks in high profile wheelchairs a comfortable ride. They are available around the clock at standard taxi rates. As far as tourist attractions go, have a listen to my radio show on access in Brazil, as Scott Rains gives a good overview on the accessibility of some of the popular tourist attractions in Rio. There’s also a few photos on the page.
